RJK students share their cultural celebrations

Over the past few weeks some of Mrs. Larkin’s ENL students at the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School presented their special cultural celebration/holidays to their classmates and teachers.

Emily Espinoza taught the class about the tradition of Carnival and how it is celebrated in Ecuador. She shared family photos and videos and explained to the class what a typical Ecuadorian Carnival looks like. We compared her cultural tradition to the tradition of Mardi Gras in the United States. Students then created their own masks for Carnival/Mardi Gras, many of which were designed to represent their own cultures.

Balsam Metawee and Nada Sghairi created and shared a presentation all about the Islamic holiday of Ramdan. They shared the meaning behind the holiday and all the traditions that are a part of this special time. They shined bright with pride and excitement while teaching the class about their culture. They even taught the class some Arabic words commonly used during Eid al-Fitr.
