Students at the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School explored imagery and sensory language in poetry with a fun activity courtesy of English Language Arts Teacher Collen Corwin and Special Education Teacher Anila Ali. Poets often use imagery to create a strong mental image for their readers that engage their five senses.

The two teachers created a stations activity for their “Elements of Poetry and Imagery Unit” where students rotated through five stations that intentionally invoked their senses. Their task was to observe or experience two objects at each station and describe them using vivid sensory language.

“It was great to see students having fun, staying engaged and working cooperatively while exploring all five senses. They were challenged to come up with words that helped them create a mental picture, feel textures, taste sweet, sour and spicy flavors, hear noises and smell aromas. They were able to rise up and meet the challenge.” Ms. Ali said.
