Monticello School District hosting fair, panel discussion, spaghetti dinner Monday, Nov. 20.

Nov. 13, 2017

The Monticello Central School District is hosting a Life Ready Fair on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at Monticello High School.
The fair is open to students in grades 5 through 12 during the school day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then open to adults in the community from 2 to 3 p.m.

According to Dana Taylor, executive director of Special Summer and After-School Programs in the district, the fair will show students and adults the opportunities that exist here in Sullivan County.

“We are partnering with the community and businesses to show the good things available to them close to home,” said Taylor. “We will highlight career paths that exist right here in our own backyards.”

There will be about 50 tables at the fair with colleges, businesses and organizations informing the public of what they provide and their career opportunities. Mobile Medic, Literacy Volunteers, Academy of Finance, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Professional Culinary School, SUNY Orange, Crystal Run, and Jeff Bank are just a few of the groups that will be in attendance.

Spaghetti dinner, panel discussion in the evening
After the fair, the Monticello High School Student Council is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

Pasta with homemade meat sauce, bread and butter, drinks and cookies are on the menu. It’s free for kids eight and under; $5 for all others.

The funds raised are earmarked for College in the Classroom scholarships, as well as to offset costs for activities such as senior night and the senior prom.

Following the dinner at 7:15 p.m., stick around for the Life Ready panel and a discussion on the economics and employment issues of the area. On the panel will be recent alumni and representatives from organizations such as the Center for Workforce

Development and Today’s Students Tomorrow’s Teachers.

“The school district can be the catalyst for success,” said Taylor. “Our purpose is to help improve skills so that people can make a better life for themselves and their families. Together, we can build a brighter Sullivan County by encouraging our students to stay here, or return here, to live and work.”
