Every year, members of the American Legion post in Wurtsboro challenge the fifth-grade students at the Emma C. Chase Elementary School to research and report on the meaning and significance of the American flag. Members of the Legion then choose three essays to be read aloud by their authors during the school’s annual Flag Day Ceremony.
Olivia MacAssey was the top winner this year, with Matthew Mootz and Ciera Caston also being invited to read their winning essays at the ceremony. Seven other students received an honorable mention.
It is a long standing tradition and a special way to celebrate Flag Day. The Chase staff is grateful to the Legion for their support.
