Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation funds new Cooke Cares Closet

In November 2024, the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation met with the George L. Cooke Backpack Program coordinator, and second grade teacher, Joana Dutcher. Ms. Dutcher explained the goals of the backpack program and what ways the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation can help. The result of this conversation was the creation of the Cooke Cares Closet. This closet contains donated items of toothbrushes, soap, socks, hats, gloves, underwear, and hygiene products that go home with students participating in the backpack program.

Due to the generosity of WLNF, there are items available for other students, as well. The teachers contact Ms. Dutcher, who manages the closet, who then gets the supplies to the student(s) in need.

“We want children to be able to focus on learning, and not where to get a toothbrush,” said Jean Eifert, a retired educator and member of the foundation’s board. “Having much-needed personal care items discreetly available, right in the school, can make a difference in a child’s confidence and feelings of self-worth.”

Ms. Dutcher said, “We are grateful for this generous donation, which will make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many children. These essential items will provide comfort, support, and opportunities for growth, ensuring that every child has the resources they need to thrive. Thank you so much to the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation!”

The Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation was founded in 2022, and is supported by about 50 donors, including individuals and companies, who have given their money or time to help. It is a 501(c)(3) charity. The foundation also has a scholarship program for college students and supports literacy programs at local libraries.

Upon hearing of the needs of the students at Cooke, and the generosity of WLNF, local Boy Scout Troop 101 of Rock Hill returned bottles and used the money to purchase more items for the Cooke Cares Closet
