Students throughout the district are getting some enhanced exposure to the sport of tennis, thanks to a generous contribution from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern. The organization donated tennis racquets and other equipment to all Monticello Central School District schools to help spark students’ interest in the sport, and the district’s physical education teachers have been incorporating the equipment into lessons.
The donation comes at a particularly opportune time – the district’s new tennis courts opened for use this spring, and for the first time ever, physical education classes at the main campus schools have been able to use the courts during class time. Previously, tennis lessons were held indoors. The athletics department also hopes that the new courts will also serve as an enticement for more students to join the district’s tennis teams in the upcoming years.
The USTA Eastern Section, based in White Plains, N.Y., is a not-for-profit community service organization whose mission is to promote and develop the growth of tennis. The section encompasses all of New York State, Northern New Jersey and Greenwich, Conn. It is one of 17 geographic sections of the United States Tennis Association, the governing body of tennis in the United States, and supports more than 49,000 members. The section also establishes and maintains rules of fair play, high standards of sportsmanship and represents, in its jurisdiction, the programs and policies of the USTA.
