The Monticello Central School District English as a New Language (ENL) Department held an awards ceremony on Nov. 30 to celebrate the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School English Language Learners (ELL) who either scored “commanding” on their proficiency tests, or moved up a level on the same test.
ENL students take the NYSESLAT test annually, which measures proficiency in English. Students are scored as “entering,” “emerging,” “transitioning,” “expanding,” and “commanding.” A student who has reached the “commanding” level is considered proficient in English and essentially “graduates” out of the ENL program and into mainstream classes. They continue to receive support from the ENL program for two years.
At the ceremony, the students enjoyed an ice cream sundae before being called up to receive their award. Students who achieved “commanding” received a medal, and students who moved up to the next level of proficiency received a certificate.
