The Monticello Police Department has arrested three Monticello High School students on drug-related charges. The charges stem from an incident at the high school on March 15, where students were found to be in possession of and/or under the influence of illegal substances.
While privacy laws prohibit the district from disclosing specific information related to the nature of the incident, the district initiated the police investigation, has been in contact with the families of all impacted students and is providing support and resources to these families as necessary. The district is fully cooperating with the criminal investigation into the matter, and will also utilize any and all disciplinary measures at its disposal in accordance with the Code of Conduct.
“Substance abuse remains a concerning issue nation-wide, particularly here in Sullivan County,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Evans said. “We strive to empower our students to make healthy choices through district initiatives such as DARE, health education classes and our social-emotional wellness programs. Numerous advocacy organizations state that one of the most effective ways parents can help prevent substance is abuse is through frequent and open discussions with their children. Should you need help starting that conversation, please reach out to your child’s guidance counselor, or one of our district’s social workers. We are committed to our promise of providing a safe and healthy learning environment for our students.”
District administrators are also working to organize informational forums for students, staff and community members to address substance abuse prevention. More information will be shared as soon as it’s available.
For more information on preventing substance abuse, please see this reference sheet from our guidance department, which was mailed home to all high school families with progress reports earlier this year.
