Dear Monticello Community Member:
I hope this finds you well and hopeful for some better weather next week.
As some of you have noticed, we’ve had some significant progress and an unfortunate setback in our Classroom 2020 project.
First, and most importantly, some unanticipated asbestos has been found in the roof of the construction area and in room 107 of Monticello High School. All areas to be abated are in the construction area (only) and will not impact any other areas utilized by our instructional staff. As required by law, we will post asbestos abatement warnings on the entrances of the high school. The abatement will be done in the closed areas, only. This should have no effect on the current operations of our high school instructional programs.
Secondly, our architects and construction managers have had to change some of their initial designs on the exterior walls of the 200 wing of the high school, due to some questionable structuring in the school’s original construction. Our architects believe our building is safe, however renovations cannot be done in these walls until these structures are mitigated. (A detailed presentation was given on this at last night’s Board of Education meeting.)
Due to this structural issue—and subsequent change order—we have begun preparing for a delayed opening to this new wing of the building. We’ll continue to advocate for an expedition of this necessary work, but our architect and construction manager have warned that the completion date might be pushed back to late October 2021. We will update you further as this progresses.
Finally, the frames for our new transportation center are arriving daily. Our contractors have been installing these and one can see the progress when driving by our campus on Route 42 (Forestburgh Road).
If you have any questions on this, please contact my office.
Stay well, and have a great weekend.
Sincerely yours,
Matthew T. Evans, Ed. D.
