American Sign Language for Beginners Virtual After School Enrichment Program

Dates/Times: Starts Thursday, February 11th, 2021 at 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Program will run for 12 weeks every Thursday ending on April 29, 2021.

American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, complex language that uses signs made by moving the hands combined with facial expressions and postures of the body. ASL is the primary language of many North Americans who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people are cut off by so many people because of communication barriers. If you were in a situation where you wanted to partake in a conversation with a Deaf or hard-of-hearing person, you would most likely struggle to convey your thoughts to them as well as understand what they are trying to convey to you. By not being able to communicate, you are cutting yourself off from a potentially enriching or beneficial interaction with someone who has a different life experience and/or perspective than you. Plus learning ASL opens up many job opportunities and is FUN!

This is an introductory course that will run for 12 weeks one hour per week from 3 to 4 pm on Tuesdays. It uses selected readings, visual recordings and interactive online activities to help students understand and respond to simple questions and statements in ASL. To demonstrate ability in signing skills, students will be asked to record videos of themselves. Students will also build their knowledge and understanding about Deaf culture and history. This course is designed to ensure that students develop competence to communicate effectively and interact with cultural understanding of the Deaf community.
