Academy of Finance prepares students for careers

Summer 2003 (back)

Established locally in 1997, the Monticello Academy is a member program of the National Academy Foundation (NAF), which operates nation-wide at 275 high schools.

In each of the participating communities, small businesses do their part to supplement the program by providing internships, career guidance and service on advisory boards.

Thanks to their efforts and the support of national sponsors, approximately 30 area students benefit each year from the Academy experience. In addition to earning up to 13 college credits through Sullivan County Community College, participants complete a six-week internship experience the summer of their junior year.

"Our youth are the leaders of tomorrow," Advisory Board Chairperson Joyce Salimeno notes. "It is up to the employers to provide them with shadowing experiences so they can make a better choice for their life's work."
