How long have you been teaching? How long at Monticello? I have been teaching for about 26 years, but am new to the public school system.
Where did you go to college? What degrees do you hold?
I went to the University of Washington and Washington State University for a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with a focus in piano and vocal performance.
I earned a Master’s Degree from Goddard College in Holistic Music Education, a focus that I designed.
Any awards/accomplishments? Any claims to fame?
I consider my Master’s Thesis an accomplishment. I am not famous, but am in some circles for my recordings and original songs.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Just being with the children, seeing how unique each one is, sharing what I’ve learned with them, and continuing to learn from them in return.
Why did you become a music teacher?
I remember what a thrill it was to learn music as a child. I want to give that same experience to others. I’ve met so many adults who think they aren’t musical because a teacher way back told them they weren’t. I want to help children plug into their natural musicality and be confident about it throughout their lives. It’s a human’s birthright.
Did you do anything else before you became a music teacher?
I published a book on how to make cheese! I have also worked as an executive secretary, and as a researcher, but it’s mostly always been music.
In your opinion, why do you think music education is important?
Refer to the information above about why I became a music teacher. Also, there is quite a bit of research that shows it affects a person’s neurology.
I think it is what makes life worth living.
How has music influenced your life?
I spent twenty pages on this in my thesis. I don’t know how to say in just a few words, but I would say it has been a constant source of inspiration, fascination, aspiration and joy. I have always chosen it over other pursuits.
Who is your favorite musician?
Joni Mitchell or Yo Yo Ma
What CD is in your CD player right now?
Fernando Ortega – Christian Singer – amazing singer!
What are your hobbies?
I’m not really a hobby person.
What advice would you offer to an aspiring musician?
Practice, practice, practice - and always hold onto the joy. Also be sure to have role models. You become whatever you think about.
