The Annual Professional Performance Review, or APPR, is a product of state legislation that determines the standards and the process for assessing teachers’ and leaders’ effectiveness. This evaluation system is one component of the larger federal Race to the Top education reform initiative and the adoption of Common Core State Standards, which together aim to improve the quality of instruction in schools and, in turn, to improve student performance and college and career readiness.
APPR aims to provide standardized, objective evaluation results, which can be used to better focus professional development for teachers and principals. The rating for a student’s current teacher(s) and school principal are released to that student’s parents only upon request and verification of identity. Parents and legal guardians of students may request the final quality rating and composite effectiveness score for each of the teachers and/or principal of the school building their child is attending in late September.
Under state guidelines, APPR takes into account classroom observations, student test scores, and a variety of achievement and assessment measures – many of which are decided at the local level.
