After 75 years, Varsity Football is Back at Monticello
During the past two years, Monticello
Athletics Director Doug Murphy has worked
side-by-side
with football coach Matt Buddenhagen to build a football program
from the ground up. It began in 2008 with a modified team. In 2009,
they added JV. Now the determined duo has the chance to create a
top-notch varsity line-up.
Football was once a popular sport in Monticello Schools, but was cut
from the athletics program 75 years ago. With its re-emergence,
district personnel believe it is the type of sport that can bring a
community together and give students an alternative outlet. It can
also help youngsters learn discipline and build camaraderie.

MHS student makes baseball history
Monticello High School junior baseball player, Bobby Wagner of
Mongaup Valley made history on Sunday when he
became the first
Monticello High School player to earn a berth on the Hudson
Valley’s Empire State Baseball team. Wagner was named to the
Hudson Valley team Sunday afternoon, after a tryout session held
at Marist College earlier in the day. The Hudson Valley team is
made up of 18 rising junior players from Dutchess, Rockland,
Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties.
Hudson Valley baseball coach Steve Greller announced the roster
of 18 players who will compete from July 22-24 in Buffalo.
"It’s a great honor for Bobby and for our program," Monticello
head coach Mike Marra said. "If any one player represents the
face of our program, it’s Bobby." “ He works extremely hard all
year at his game.” “He’s in the weight room in the off-season,
in the gym in the winter working on his speed and agility, he
works at our youth camp with the Little Leaguers giving back to
his community and he comes to play every game doing whatever we
ask him to do to win a game.”
Wagner becomes only the second player from Sullivan County to
participate on the Empire State Games baseball team (Evan
Kirsch, Liberty in 2008).

Memorabilia sought for Monticello High School baseball history display
The Monticello High School
Athletics Department is actively seeking donations of
interesting, unusual and/or special items and artifacts to
document and archive the rich history of baseball in Monticello
Schools.
Items such as publications, photographs, newspaper articles,
scorebooks, pennants, buttons, etc., are being sought as part of
the quest to preserve this historical legacy.
“We want to honor the past and inspire the future,” said
Monticello Panthers baseball coach, Mike Marra. “We’d like to
display many of the artifacts and honor our alumni at the John
Spear Memorial Baseball Tournament. We've evolved from our
humble beginnings and our history continues to unfold - let's
not lose the memories."
For more information or to make a donation, contact Coach Marra
at 845-794-8840 ext. 10515 or via e-mail at
mmarra@k12mcsd.net.
Please keep this in mind the next time you clean out your attic,
basement, garage or closets and remember, one person's junk can
be an archivist's treasure!
