Governor Patterson's
proposed budget has Monticello Schools slated to lose almost $2
million in state aid The loss
of this large amount of aid for the 2009-10 school year, will
now have to be factored in during the budget formation process
and means the district must make deeper cuts than previously
expected. Such budget cuts will be necessary to avoid shifting
the burden to taxpayers.

Message from the
U.S. Department of State
Beginning January 2007, it became a requirement to have a U.S.
passport for all international travel. Effective June 2009, it
will be necessary to have an official travel document for land
border crossing and sea travel in the Western Hemisphere
(Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Bahamas, etc.) In order to avoid
delays, it is suggested that anyone planning to travel to these
regions apply as early as possible for their travel documents.
More info is available at the Sullivan County Clerk's office,
any U.S. Post Office or by calling the National Passport
Information Center at 877-478-2778. |

Tough times and
tough choices ahead
Although Governor Patterson
did not get to present his plan to the state legislature on
November 18 and so far, we have managed to escape the $1.1
million cut in aid to our schools, we are a long way from being
out of financial danger.

changes in this year’s Monticello Schools transportation schedule, she had mixed feelings. Her first concern was for her child’s
safety, so she began to research what others were doing. What she

Gourmet Meal more
than just Good Food
When Yellow Cab owner Alan Kesten won the silent auction bid for a
home-cooked meal at the Sullivan County Boys & Girls Club’s Annual
Fundraising Dinner Dance, he didn’t realize that he was in for such
a treat. What he won was an extravagant, gourmet, 7-course Greek
dinner personally cooked by Monticello Schools Superintendent Dr.
Patrick Michel and Fallsburg Schools Superintendent Ivan Katz.

School
tax relief info
All area residents who own their own homes can reduce their school
property taxes through the New York State School Tax Relief
(STAR) program - regardless of age or income. But, the savings is
not automatic; you need to apply for it through your local tax
assessor's office to be eligible for the tax break. Taxpayers receiving the Basic STAR
exemption do not need to apply every year, but seniors receiving
Enhanced STAR must reapply. More |
