The Monticello School District is the largest of eight school districts of Sullivan County, encompassing 191 square miles. The district includes the town of Wurtsboro, White Lake, Thompson, Forestburgh, Bethel, Fallsburg, Mamakating, and Monticello are served by the district. The district's population was 3,523 for the 2003-04 school year.

The district has a very diverse socio-economic base, according to the 2000 census. A review of free lunch information, one of the best internal sources of data, reveals that approximately 37% of the total school population participated, which indicates a high number of students coming from homes that suffer economic need.

In the Monticello District, student mobility is an important issue. Last year, 543 new students or registrants transferred into the district. At the same time, 462 transferred out of the district, As a result, 1005 students entered or left the district, or approximately 28% of our students. This is a major issue in regards to continuity of instruction, socialization of students into the district culture, and the constant assessment of new student skills.

Also, the Monticello School District serves a student population that may be termed at risk. According to the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, Sullivan County serves a student population which is coping with a variety of problems including families in poverty, family dysfunction, alcohol and drug abuse, delinquency, and at risk sexual behavior.
