Details about individual programs
During the 2002-03 school year, K-2 teachers at the Cooke School
participated in the New York State Reading Academy. The Reading Academy
consists of nine module online courses. The purpose of the course is to
provide teachers with effective methods of reading instruction and
techniques to monitor student progress. The course centers around six
areas of early reading:
- phonemic awareness
- phonics and alphabetic principles
- vocabulary fluency
- word study
- and comprehension.
Teachers meet on a regular basis with the Reading Academy coach, Susan
Gottleib, to provide participants with a clear understanding of program
content and supportive learning. Teachers review continuous feedback
through peer and coach discussion and reviews. Ten teachers
completed the course, fifteen will complete in October, fifteen will
complete in December. Grade 3 teachers at Rutherford School started
the course in the fall.
